Scanners and handhelds
Scanners and handhelds
Set up Zebra and Honeywell handhelds so the trigger scans into the app, plus keyboard scanners, cameras, NFC and RFID readers.
This page is for the IT team or whoever prepares handhelds. Phones that scan with the camera need no setup.

Zebra handhelds (DataWedge)
In DataWedge on the device, or through your device management tool, create a profile for the DataMagik app:
- Create a new profile, for example DataMagik, and associate it with the app com.datamagik.extend (all activities).
- Turn Barcode input on, with the symbologies your labels use.
- Turn Intent output on. Set the intent action to com.datamagik.extend.SCAN and the intent delivery to Broadcast intent.
- Turn Keystroke output off. Otherwise every scan also arrives as typed characters.
Open DataMagik and pull the trigger on the Scan tab. The receipt should say via trigger.
For an RFID sled such as the Zebra RFD40, also turn on RFID input in the same profile, so tag reads arrive with the same intent. The app accepts tag EPCs in hex, and a sweep may send many at once.
Honeywell handhelds
The app listens for Honeywell's standard barcode broadcast. In the device's scanner settings, claim the scanner for the DataMagik app (com.datamagik.extend) and turn on broadcast (intent) output for it. Check on the Scan tab that the receipt says via trigger.
Keyboard scanners
A scanner that types the barcode and presses Enter works on any device with no setup. The app treats fast keys ending in Enter, at least 3 characters long, typed outside a text box, as a scan. Receipts say via scanner.
Labels the app reads
The app works out what a barcode is from its shape: containers, master units, shippers, dies, lanes, doors and trailers, workcenters, locations and badges. The shapes are listed in Scanning, receipts and Undo. Make sure your location, door and workcenter labels match these shapes, for example DOOR 3, LANE 4 and PRS-01.
Device tips
- Install the app from Google Play or the App Store, or push it with your device management tool.
- For shared handhelds, register each one as a shared device; see People, devices and printing.
- The app needs Android 7.0 or later, or iOS 15.5 or later.
- On Android, the first camera scan may download Google's barcode scanner module, so open the camera once while on Wi-Fi when preparing a device.
- The app does not use location or notifications, so these can stay off.
